why we built neostella: bringing legal technology into the modern era

by

The legal industry is one of the largest, highest-spending markets in the world, yet it runs on technology that trails almost every other industry by five to ten years. That gap is why Neostella exists.

how neostella came to be

I moved Neostella into the legal space because I saw the potential to build legal technology the right way.

At the time, many firms didn’t have a technology plan. They had no leadership to guide technology decisions, no roadmap to modernize their systems, and no vision for how technology should serve the practice. After all, law school teaches lawyers to practice law, not to run software strategy.

The deeper issue, however, was that many firms didn’t operate like businesses. Instead, they operated like law firms. Today, that is changing fast, as firms work to become businesses that practice law.

Meanwhile, lawyers with no background in enterprise applications had built much of the legal software on the market. They didn’t know how to scale, and they didn’t understand security or permissions. As a result, a huge market was in the middle of real transformation, with very few sophisticated technology players. I saw an opportunity to be one of them.

two shifts no firm could ignore

Remote work exposed the cracks. Legacy legal technology was clunky, but it worked as long as everyone sat in the same office every day. Once teams went remote and hybrid, that model broke. Firms suddenly needed a modern technology stack built for a distributed workforce.

AI raised the bar. Legal is one of the top handful of use cases for AI. Firms aren’t only looking to modernize their infrastructure anymore. They’re asking how they can bring in technology that genuinely makes their people more effective, and old systems were never designed for that.

building legal tech the right way

These shifts turned a slow-moving industry into one that has to change now. Today’s firms need technology that scales, keeps their data secure, works wherever their people are, and puts AI to real use. That’s what building legal technology the right way means to me, and it’s why Neostella exists. The firms that modernize today will define what the practice of law looks like for the next generation. I intend to help them get there.
